CARIFTA 2013 UPDATES - T&T down to 3rd on medal table

4x4 boys relegated to silver

T&T moved down one spot to third on the medal table, following the reinstatement of Jamaica as boys’ under-20 4x400m winners. The Jamaicans protested their disqualification and won, relegating T&T to silver in the event. With their eight gold medals, two silver and 10 bronze, T&T are third.

Jamaica (29 gold medals, 25 silver, 15 bronze) and Bahamas (eight gold medals, 11 silver, 12 bronze) were first and second, respectively.

T&T 2nd on medal table!

T&T ended the 2013 Carifta Games with nine gold medals, one silver and 10 bronze, for a grand total of 20. T&T finished second on the medal table. Jamaica (28 gold medals, 25 silver, 15 bronze) and Bahamas (eight gold medals, 12 silver, 11 bronze) were first and third, respectively.

4x4 gold!

Asa Guevara, Jereem Richards, Theon Lewis and 400m champion Machel Cedenio secured Carifta Games gold for T&T in the boys’ under-20 4x400m relay, the final event at Carifta 2013. The T&T quartet clocked 3:06.23. Jamaica crossed the line first but were disqualified. Silver went to Bahamas in 3:07.44.

Marshall strikes gold

Akeem Marshall bagged gold for T&T in the boys’ under-20 5,000m in 16:49.96. Suriname’s Clifton Betje (16:55.00) earned silver and Bermuda’s Juma Mouchette (16:59.09), bronze.

And Akeel Edwards produced a 14.99m effort in the boys’ under-20 triple jump to secure bronze for T&T.

Richards third in half-lap

T&T’s Jereem Richards clocked a wind-aided 20.69 seconds to capture bronze in the boys’ under-20 200 metres final. Bahamian Teray Smith won in 20.58, while the runner-up spot went to Jamaican Jevaughn Minzie (20.64).

T&T’s Jonathan Farinha was fifth in 21.03.

In the girls’ under-20 200m final, Kayelle Clarke copped sixth spot in 23.76 seconds.

Double bronze for Walters

T&T’s Ruebin Walters captured his second bronze medal at Carifta 2013 when he finished third in the boys’ under-20 110m hurdles in 13.66 seconds. Guadeloupe’s Belocian Wilhem won in 13.49, from Jamaican Omar McLeod (13.57). Another T&T athlete, Christian Hood Boyce was seventh in 14.67.

The T&T tally is now seven gold medals, one silver medal and eight bronze medals.

Wright repeats

Andwuelle Wright made a successful defence of his boys’ under-17 long jump title. And there was bronze too for T&T in the event, Che Richards copping third spot. Wright jumped 7.29 metres, and Richards a wind-assisted 7.01m.

Parris claims sprint hurdles bronze

T&T’s Jeminise Parris added girls’ under-17 100 metres hurdles bronze to the 300m hurdles gold she captured yesterday. Running into a strong 3.3 metres per second headwind, Parris clocked 14.64 seconds to secure third spot, behind Jamaicans Rushelle Burton (13.96) and Janeek Brown (14.30). T&T’s Kermisha Serapio (15.55) was fifth.

Romeo grabs shot put gold

Hezekiel Romeo grabbed Carifta gold for Trinidad and Tobago in the boys’ under-20 shot put! T&T now have six gold medals.

Cherisse Murray threw 34.14 metres to finish fifth in the girls’ under-20 javelin.

London does the double

Mark London made a successful defence of his Carifta Games boys’ under-20 800 metres title, topping the field in one minute, 51.34 seconds. Bahamian Andre Colebrooke finished second in 1:51.43, while third spot went to St Lucia’s Marbeq Edgar (1:51.74).

T&T’s Domonique Williams finished fourth in the girls’ under-20 800m in 2:10.36. And Miguel Hackett was seventh in the boys’ under-17 800m in 2:06.66.

Briggs 4th in javelin

In an early event, on the third and final day of Carifta 2013, T&T’s Akidah Briggs finished fourth in the girls’ under-17 javelin with a 37.03 metres throw. The winner, Dominica’s Shanee Angol produced a 43.89m effort – a new Games record.

T&T tally now 10

Shaunna Downey earned bronze for T&T in the girls’ under-20 discus. She threw 41.95m. The T&T medal tally is now 10 – four gold medals, one silver and five bronze.

Silver in boys’ under-20 4x1

T&T seized silver in the boys’ under-20 4x100 metres relay in 40.36 seconds. Jamaica won in 39.92, while third spot went to Turks & Caicos Islands in 44.11.

Bronze in girls’ under-20 4x1

T&T finished third in the girls’ under-20 4x100 metres relay in 45.71 seconds. The medal tally is now eight – four in the gold column and four in the bronze.

Alexander earns 3,000 bronze

Hakeem Alexander took T&T’s medal tally to seven when he finished third in the boys’ under-17 3,000 metres event in nine minutes, 49.59 seconds. Jamaican Jauavney James won in 9:26.45, from Guadeloupe’s Alvin Nardin (9:27.32).

Walters bags bronze

Reubin Walters bagged bronze in the Carifta Games boys’ under-20 400m hurdles in 52.31 seconds. Jamaica’s Omar McLeod clocked 51.46 to claim gold, while silver went to Kion Joseph (51.94), of Barbados.

Parris wins 300 hurdles

Jeminise Parris captured gold number four for Trinidad and Tobago at Carifta 2013. The 15-year-old athlete clocked 43.24 seconds to win the girls’ under-17 300m hurdles title. The other T&T athlete in the race, Kermisha Serapio was sixth in 46.43.

Clarke advances in half-lap

Kayelle Clarke will do battle in tomorrow’s girls’ under-20 200 metres final. The T&T sprinter finished second in heat three in 24.88 seconds. Her teammate, Aaliyah Telesford was fourth in heat two and ninth overall in 25.20. The top eight advanced to the final.

Farinha, Richards in 200 medal hunt

Jonathan Farinha and Jereem Richards will represent T&T in tomorrow’s Carifta Games boys’ under-20 200m final. In the preliminary round, today, Farinha clocked 21.91 seconds to finish second in heat three, advancing automatically to the championship race. Richards was third in heat one in 21.54, and qualified as a “fastest loser”.

Parris, Serapio in 300 hurdles final

T&T athletes, Jeminise Parris and Kermisha Serapio are through to the Carifta Games girls’ under-17 300m hurdles final. They will do battle for precious metal at 6.15 this evening.

In the qualifying round, Parris finished second in heat one in 44.70 seconds, advancing to the championship race second fastest overall. In heat two, Serapio finished third in 46.75. She was seventh fastest overall.

Yesterday, Kevin Roberts pulled up with a hamstring injury in the boys’ open heptathlon 200m, and withdrew from the multi-discipline event.

Earlier in the day, Roberts finished fifth in the 110m hurdles in 15.99 seconds, fifth in the long jump with a 6.42m leap, and sixth in the javelin (43.56m).

Charles bags bronze

Shaiann Charles added to T&T’s Carifta Games medal haul when she bagged bronze in the girls’ under-17 discus, in the early session, today. She threw 39.19 metres. T&T now have three gold medals and Charles’ bronze.

Jamaica secured gold and silver. Shanice Love emerged victorious with a 40.16m effort, while the runner-up spot went to Janell Fullerton (39.91m).

T&T’s shot put champion Chelsea James finished fourth with a 38.63m throw.

Ian West was eighth in the boys’ under-17 shot put. The T&T athlete threw the iron ball 11.85m.

Hackett advances

Miguel Hackett clocked 2:04.24 to finish fourth in his boys’ under-17 800 metres qualifying heat. The T&T runner advanced to the final as a “fastest loser”. Hackett was seventh fastest overall. However, his teammate, Atiba Samuel, exited the event after finishing seventh in his heat and 15th overall in 2:18.18.

London cruises into 800 final

T&T’s Mark London cruised into the boys’ under-20 800 metres final with a comfortable victory in the second of three qualifying heats, this morning. Winner of the 1500m event yesterday, London returned to the track to top his 800 heat in one minute, 55.10 seconds.

London was the second fastest qualifier, behind heat three winner, Marbeq Edgar of St Lucia. Edgar clocked 1:53.19.

London is the defending champion.

Constantine, Campbell 7th

T&T’s John Mark Constantine finished seventh in the boys’ under-20 100m final in 10.72 seconds. Anguilla’s Zharnel Hughes clocked 10.44 to grab gold, ahead of Jamaican Jazeel Murphy (10.48) and Antiguan Tahir Walsh (10.49).

In the boys’ under-17 100m final, T&T’s Kadeem Campbell was seventh in 12.03 seconds. Barbadian Mario Burke was the class of the field, winning in 10.61, from Bahamian Keanu Pennerman (10.85) and Jamaican Jelani Walker (10.93).

Wickham 4th in 100

Lisa Wickham was the best of the T&T sprinters on show in the 100 metres events, late yesterday. Wickham finished fourth in the girls' under-20 century in 11.69 seconds. Bahamians Devynne Charlton and Carmiesha Cox finished one-two, clocking 11.60 and 11.61, respectively. Jamaican Monique Spencer was third in 11.64, while T&T's Aaliyah Telesford copped sixth spot in 11.83.

Jamaica in front

At the end of day 1 at Carifta 2013, T&T had three gold medals, good enough for second spot on the medal table, behind runaway leaders Jamaica - seven gold medals, eight silver, ten bronze. Hosts Bahamas were third with two gold medals, five silver, four bronze.

Cedenio golden!

Machel Cedenio clocked a personal best 45.93 seconds to capture the Carifta Games boys’ under-20 400 metres title, taking T&T's day one medal haul to three - all gold!

London wins 1500

Mark London earned T&T a second gold medal on day one of the 2013 Carifta Games, here in Nassau, Bahamas, today.

London clocked four minutes, 01.07 seconds to capture the boys' under-20 1500 metres title.

West 4th in javelin

Ian West finished fourth in the boys' under-17 javelin. The T&T thrower produced a 55.40 metres effort.

Anderson Peters won with a 64.01m throw, the Grenadian breaking his own Games record of 60.50m, established at the 2012 Games, in Bermuda.

T&T's Ayanna Glasgow and Khemani Roberts finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the girls' under-17 high jump, clearing 1.60m and 1.55m.

And in the boys' under-20 discus, Micah McNish threw 47.11m to finish seventh, while his T&T teammate, Kenejah Williams copped eighth spot with a 46.90m effort.

Briggs fourth

T&T fell just short of earning two medals in the Carifta Games girls' under-17 shot put.

T&T's Chelsea James repeated as champion with a Games record throw of 14.48 metres. Jamaican Janell Fullerton was second with a 13.75m effort, while third spot went to Bahamian Brashae Wood, who threw 12.60m.

Akidah Briggs was just two centimetres short of bronze, the T&T thrower landing the shot 12.58m to cop fourth spot.

James repeats in shot put

Chelsea James has struck gold for Trinidad and Tobago in the girls' under-17 shot put, the 15-year-old Tobago thrower retaining her title with a 14.48 metres heave - a new Games record!

The organisers of the Games have been having serious problems with connectivity and the supply of results. Once they are able to solve these problems, we will be updating you more regularly in the second session. Bye for now.
