Parris gets T&T fourth Carifta gold

NASSAU— Jeminise Parris won T&T’s fourth gold medal on the second day of action at the 42nd annual Carifta Games at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas yesterday.

Parris won the Girls Under 17 300m hurdles finals in a personal best time of 43.24.

The gold medal follows the successes of Machel Cedenio, Mark London and Chelsea James on Saturday’s opening day when T&T captured three gold medals.

Cedenio scorched the track in 45.93 seconds to win the Under 20 400 metres tiitle. London took captured the Under 20 1500 metres while James repeated as Under 17 shot put champion.

However, yesterday Jamaican throwers dominated the morning session on the heels of a less than outstanding effort from their sprinters on the opening day of the meet.

Gold medals in the under-17 boy’s shot put and girl’s under-17 discus highlighted a very good session for the regional athletic powerhouse at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau.

Warren Barrett, son of a former Jamaica goalkeeper with the same name, threw 16.88 metres, in his second attempt, to win the Under-17 boys shot put.

Barrett’s country woman Vashon McCarthy, who won the Class Two event for Ascot at Champs, was second with a throw of 16.47 metres, his only mark over 16 metres. Grenada’s Anderson Peters picked up bronze with a throw of 15.53 to follow up an impressive throw of 64.01 which gave him top honours in the boys’ Under-17 javelin Saturday.

Two Jamaican athletes were also the main contenders for gold in the discus throw as well.

Shanice Love secured top spot after hurling the discus to a distance of 40.16 metres surpassing the 39.91 metres set by her teammate Janell Fullerton.

Love, who was representing Jamaica for the first time, was elated by her accomplishment.

“To come and win a medal on my first national trip, it feels like a star,” declared Love.

“So I want to thank staff here and my supporters for helping me to achieve my goal.”

The outstanding performance by Jamaican athletes in the field Sunday morning was a contrast to their sprinters on the opening day which saw them winning only one of four 100 metre finals.
