More CARIFTA gold for national athletes

FIVE MORE gold medals were claimed by the Trinidad and Tobago contingent, four yesterday and one on Sunday evening, as the 42nd CARIFTA Track and Field Championships entered its final stages at the TA Robinson Stadium, Nassau, Bahamas.

The Games were due to conclude last evening.

Yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago team added eight medals to its collection — four gold and four bronze, and the overall tally, as at press time last evening, stood at 17 (eight gold, one silver and eight bronze).

Andwuelle Wright and Che Richards took gold and bronze in the boys Under-17 long jump, with Wright leaping 7.29 metres and Richards 7.01m. Jamaica’s Ajani James got silver in 7.20m.

Hezekiel Romeo overtook Jamaica’s Chadrick Dacosta, with his final throw, to claim gold in the boys Under-20 shot put. Romeo, who entered his last attempt in second spot (18.19m to Dacosta’s 18.24m), produced an excellent effort of 18.66m while Dacosta returned a heave of 18.42m.

Eldred Henry of the British Virgin Islands was third (18.01m) and TT’s Kenejah Williams sixth (16.15m).

Mark London completed the boys Under-20 800m and 1,500m double. The 19-year-old won the two-lap race in one minute 51.34 seconds, ahead of Andre Colebrooke of the Bahamas (1:51.43) and St Lucia’s Marbeq Edgar (1:51.74).

And, Akeem Marshall, during the evening session, prevailed in the boys Under-20 5,000m in 16:49.96, followed by Clifton Betje of Suriname (16:55.00) and Juma Mouchette of Bermuda (16:59.09).

And, on Sunday evening, Jemenise Parris got TT’s fourth gold as she took the girls Under-17 300-metre hurdles in 43.24 seconds, while her compatriot Kermisha Serapio was sixth in 46.43. Patrice Moody of Jamaica was second (43.73) and Tristan Evelyn of Barbados was third (44.84).

Yesterday, Parris came third in the girls Under-17 100m hurdles in 14.64, behind Jamaica’s Rushelle Burton (13.96) and Janeek Brown (14.30), while Serapio was fifth (15.55). Rueben Walters got bronze in the boys Under-20 110m hurdles in 13.66 seconds, with fellow TT finalist Christian Hoodboyce seventh (14.67). Belocian Wilhem of Guadeloupe (13.49) and Omar McLeod of Jamaica (13.57) took the top two places.

Jereem Richards got bronze in the boys Under-20 200m in 20.69, trailing Teray Smith of the Bahamas (20.58) and Jevaughn Minzie of Jamaica (20.64), while Jonathan Farinha was fifth (21.03).

On Sunday evening, Trinidad and Tobago claimed five medals - one gold (Parris), one silver and three bronze.

Claiming silver were the boys Under-20 4x100m relay team of Breon Munnings, Ayodelle Taffe, Jereem Richards and John Constantine. The TT quartet finished the race in 40.36 seconds, trailing Jamaica who ran 39.92, while the Turks and Caicos Islands were third in 44.11.

The girls Under-20 4x100m relay quartet of Shakera Hall, Akela Jones, Ariel Jackson and Shavonne Husbands placed third in their final, clocking 45.71. The Bahamas got gold in 44.77 and Barbados silver in 45.67.

Alexander Haleem took bronze in the boys Under-17 3000m in nine minutes 49.59 seconds, well behind the top two - Jauavney James of Jamaica (9:26.45) and Nardin Alvin of Guadeloupe (9:27.32).

And, in the girls Under-20 discus, Shaunna Downey was third with a best effort of 41.95m, while another TT entrant Latoya Gilding was seventh with 36.30m. Jamaica claimed gold and silver, courtesy Gleneve Grange (47.95m) and Rochelle Frazer (42.33m).
