TT athletics third in CARIFTA medal count

Newsday :: 03.04.2013

TRINIDAD AND Tobago finished third in the medal count as the 42nd CARIFTA Track and Field Championships ended on Monday evening at the TA Robinson Stadium, Nassau, Bahamas.

The TT squad will return home with 20 medals - eight gold, two silver and 10 bronze.

But, it came as no surprise as Jamaica topped the field with 68 medals, more than Trinidad and Tobago and second-placed, hosts Bahamas, respectively.

Jamaica ended with 28 gold, 25 silver and 15 bronze, while the Bahamas claimed 31 medals - eight gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze. Barbados were fourth on the medal count with 20 (four gold, 14 silver and two bronze).

There was a piece of drama on the last event of the three-day Games, with Jamaica (three minutes 5.68 seconds) and Trinidad and Tobago (3:06.23) finishing one-two in the boys Under-20 4x400-metre relay. Both teams lowered the previous CARIFTA standard of 3:07.10 set by Jamaica in 2007.

But the Jamaica team (Lennox Williams, Omar McLeod, Jevaughn Minzie and Jovan Francis) were initially disqualified, and the TT quartet of Asa Guevara, Jereem Richards, Theon Lewis and Machel Cedenio were promoted to first place.

However, the Games officials, upon a protest by Jamaica, reversed the decision, and Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bahamas (3:07.44) claimed the top three positions.

Also on Monday evening, Akeel Edwards collected bronze in the boys Under-20 triple jump.

The 19-year-old, with his third attempt (after his first two efforts were ruled as fouls), landed at 14.99 metres.

Jamaica’s Clive Pullen, with his first go, took gold with a leap of 15.44m while Charles Greaves of Barbados got silver with 15.26m
