Baptiste opens season fourth in 4x400m

Olympic 100m finalist Kelly-Ann Baptiste opened her 2013 season at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida, USA, on the weekend. Baptiste and her Pure Athletics team finished fourth in the women’s 4x400m in 3:29.44.

The 2011/2012 Sportswoman of the Year teamed up with training partners Samantha Henry Robinson of Jamaica and Americans Shalonda Solomon and Tiffany Townsend to finish behind One Gold Athletics (3:23.58), Florida (3:27.43) and Texas (3:27.97), respectively.

In last year’s race, Pure Athletics was second behind One Gold. Aleesha Barber was 12th in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.39 while Moriba Morain was 43rd overall in the men’s 100m in 10.76 with T&T Elite teammate Jamil James 55th in the men’s 400m (50.76). At the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona, Deborah John (North Dakota State) was 10th in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.95.

Olympic men’s 4x400m bronze medallist Deon Lendore was in winner’s row, anchoring his Texas A&M team to victory in the men’s 4x400m at the Oregon Pepsi Invitational in Eugene, Oregon. Shawn Fermin (Washington State) collected bronze in the women’s 400m in 53.66 and grabbed another bronze with Washington State’s 4x400m (3:44.25) outfit. At the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas on March 27 Lendore also anchored Texas A&M to the top spot in 3:02.76 with an impressive last leg split of 44.46.

Jamaal James topped the men’s 1,500m Division II field at the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey.

James completed the 3 3/4 lap race in 3:53.30 to win the first of three heats and clocked the fastest time overall.

At the Eagle Twilight in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 27 , Deandra Daniel leaped to victory inthe women’s high jump with a distance of 1.62. The Coppin State student was also ninth in the long jump (5.02).

School-mate Haysean Cowie-Clarke was runner-up in the men’s 100m (11.02) and finished seventh in the 200m (23.43). The former Scarborough Sec/Bishop High student also helped Coppin State to the top spot in the men’s 4x100m (42.81). (CC)
