Alexander, Blaise, Allsop strike gold

Annie Alexander underlined her class with victory in the women’s invitational discus event, at the Sea Ray Relays, in Tennessee, USA, yesterday.

The Trinidad and Tobago field athlete went past the 50-metre mark five times in the competition. She opened with a 51.63 metres effort, and followed up with 50.55m and 50.36m throws. Alexander’s best on the day came in round four, the 25-year-old landing the implement 52.86m. She fouled in the fifth round, and then closed off with a 51.85m throw.

Alexander bagged bronze in the women’s shot put. Her best throw—15.78m—came in the sixth and final round of the competition.

Jamol James picked up bronze in the men’s 100m dash, the University of Tennessee sophomore getting home in 10.66 seconds in the final. James clocked 10.53 in the preliminary round to qualify for the championship race fifth fastest. Middle Tennessee State University’s Kendall Bacchus finished 35th overall in a wind-aided 10.92.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior, Durell Busby clocked a windy 14.20 seconds for sixth spot in the men’s 110m hurdles. And in the men’s 200m, James was 14th overall in 21.48.

At the Louisiana State University (LSU) Battle on the Bayou meet, in Louisiana, T&T’s Kyron Blaise grabbed gold in the men’s triple jump with a 15.81 metres effort.

In the opening round, Blaise jumped a wind-assisted 15.27m. It was in the second round that the 23-year-old disturbed the sand at 15.81m. He produced a 15.06m effort in round three, but fouled in the fourth round. Blaise jumped just 14.39m and 14.45m in the last two rounds, but had already done enough to secure the top spot.

Another T&T athlete, Shermund Allsop struck gold in the men’s 200m. The LSU junior got to the line in a windy 20.95 seconds, the same time recorded by second-placed Ryan Milus, of the United States.

It took a closer examination of the photo finish to separate the sprinters, Allsop getting the better of Milus by just two-thousandths of a second--20.944 to 20.946.

Allsop also competed in the 100m dash, finishing fourth in 10.48. At the KT Woodman Classic, in Kansas, Wichita State University’s Samantha Shukla returned a time of 18 minutes, 01.34 seconds to finish seventh in the women’s 5,000m event.

Butler Community College student, Abiane Collymore was 20th in the women’s 800m in 2:25.20. And in the men’s 100m dash, Wichita State’s Aaron Leung Woo-Gabriel and Butler’s Richard Marcano were 24th and 32nd, respectively. Woo-Gabriel clocked a wind-aided 10.92 seconds, and Marcano, a windy 10.96.
