Callendar, Gordon in action at Chris Brown Invitational

Trinidad Guardian :: 13.04.2013

Two-time Olympic sprint relay medallist Emmanuel Callendar and Olympic hurdler Jehue Gordon will compete at the inaugural Chris Brown Bahamas Invitational at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, later today.

Callendar is listed to compete in the men’s sprints. The 2009 Central American and Caribbean 100m champion will match strides with former World and Olympic 100m gold medallist Justin Gatlin of the US, Jamaica’s two-time World Junior champ Dexter Lee, Gatlin's compatriot Darvis Patton and Jeff Demps. Lee will be joined by fellow Jamaican Sheldon Mitchell. Kemar Hyman of Cayman Islands is also among the starters. Gordon will do battle in the men’s 400m hurdles and will be going for his second one-lap hurdles victory for the season after his triumph at the Falcons Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on March 22 in 49.65 seconds.

The 2010 World Junior victor will renew his rival with Puerto Rico's Eric Alejandro whom he beat at the Falcon Games. Another Puerto Rican Michael Bejarano is in the line-up.

The meet is being organised by Bahamian quartermiler Chris Brown, who was a member of his country’s 4x400m which sped to gold in the event at the London Olympics last August.

Reigning World and Olympic winner Kirani James of Grenada, Jamaica's triple Olympic champ sprint queen Veronica Campbell are among the headline acts for the one-day meet.

Former World and Olympic winner LaShawn Meritt (USA) is also down to compete. The day’s activities get underway at 1.00 pm with events for local high school athletes.

The top athletes will face the starter from 5 pm with the men’s and women’s 4x100m. The women’s and men’s 400m hurdles are set for 6.15 pm and 6.20 pm, respectively, and will be followed by the 200m (women 7 pm and men 7.10 pm).
