Keshorn Walcott produced a performance fitting of his status as Olympic champion, the Trinidad and Tobago field athlete hurling the spear 84.39 metres at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, late yesterday, to capture the TnT Elite Twilight Games men’s javelin title.

In his first outing since his Olympic triumph in August last year, Walcott satisfied his adoring fans with his big first round effort. The throw was just 19 centimetres short of the 84.58m national record he had established in grabbing Olympic gold.

A fast-finishing Michelle-Lee Ahye struck gold in the Twilight Games women’s 100 metres dash in 11.37 seconds. The T&T sprinter finished ahead of American Muna Lee (11.44) and Ghanaian Flings Owusu-Agyapong (11.55).

Ayodele Taffe won the keenly contested men’s 100m dash, the teenager stopping the clock at 10.56 seconds. Silver went to Moriba Morain, in 10.59. John Mark Constantine got bronze in 10.67, the same time produced by fourth-placed Jonathan Farinha. Former world junior champion Darrel Brown clocked 10.74 to finish fifth.

Carifta Games boys’ under-20 champion Machel Cedenio was the class of the men’s 400m field, the Simplex quartermiler winning in 45.99 seconds, from American Marcus Boyd (46.08). Jereem Richards bagged bronze in a personal best 46.20.

Domonique Williams emerged victorious in the women’s 400m, the T&T runner finishing strong to force Jamaica’s Stacey-Anne Smith into second spot.

Smith came off the final turn in front, but the lead was not big enough, Williams reeling her in near the end of the race to win in a personal best 53.89 seconds. Smith clocked 54.03 to pick up silver, while bronze went to Dana Massiah in 54.13.

Mikel Thomas produced an impressive run in the men’s 110m hurdles, the T&T athlete winning in 13.46 seconds.

National record holder Akeem Stewart dominated his rivals in the men’s shot put. The Tobago Falcons athlete threw the iron ball 18.68m for a huge cushion on Carifta Games boys’ under-20 champion Hezekiel Romeo, the runner-up with a 16.86m effort.

Last Sunday, Stewart established a new national record, throwing 19.32m at the Alvin Daniel and Point Fortin Games to erase Dave Stoute’s 18.91m standard from the books.

In the women’s shot put, Cleopatra Borel got the better of her Cuban rival, Yaniuvis Lopez. Borel, T&T’s best-ever female thrower, produced her winning effort of 17.75m in the very first round of the competition. Lopez threw 17.40m to claim silver.

Jorge Fernandez gave a classy display in the men’s discus, the Cuban thrower striking gold with a 63.04m effort. T&T’s Quincy Wilson threw 57.17m to secure silver.

And Kyron Blaise produced a 7.52m leap to capture the men’s long jump title.
