Quow wins in Texas

Impressive 100 opener for Baptiste

Renny Quow captured the men’s 200 metres title at the South Plains College Invitational, in Texas, USA, on Saturday. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete stopped the clock at 20.78 seconds.

Reyare Thomas was also in winners’ row, grabbing gold in the women’s 100m dash in a wind-assisted 11.53 seconds. Another T&T sprinter, South Plains student Shun-Shauna Mason was second in 11.65.

Western Texas College athlete, Kernesha Spann clocked 55.45 seconds for silver in the women’s 400m. And in the women’s 200m, Mason was fifth in 25.31.

At the Jamaica International Invitational, Kelly-Ann Baptiste secured second spot in the women’s 100m in 11.06 seconds. The race was the T&T sprinter’s 2013 individual opener. Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown topped the field in 11.01, while third spot was copped by another Jamaican, Carrie Russell (11.08).

Baptiste is fourth on the 2013 world performance list with her 11.06 run. American English Gardner is the world-leader at 11.00. Campbell-Brown (11.01) and American Octavious Freeman (11.02) are second and third, respectively.

Jehue Gordon bagged bronze in the Jamaica International Invitational men’s 400m hurdles. In a keenly contested race, the T&T athlete clocked 49.26 seconds—his best run this season--to finish just behind the top two, Americans Justin Gaymon and Kerron Clement. Gaymon won in 49.23, the same time clocked by T&T-born Clement.

Ayanna Alexander earned bronze in the women’s triple jump with a 13.73 metres effort.

Quincy Wilson threw 59.05m to finish fourth in the men’s discus. And in the men’s 100m “A” race, Emmanuel Callender was eighth in 10.58 seconds.

In the main men’s 100m race, American Tyson Gay emerged victorious in an impressive 9.86—the fastest time in the world this year.

At the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, in North Carolina, Coppin State University’s Deandra Daniel struck gold in the women’s high jump with a 1.72m clearance. Morgan State University student, Jeanelle Ovid went over the bar at 1.67m to finish fourth.

Delaware State University senior, Kevaughn Laviea was fourth in the men’s 400m hurdles in 52.65 seconds. And Coppin State’s Haysean Cowie-Clarke clocked a wind-aided 10.73 for 11th spot overall in the men’s 100m.

Deborah John topped the women’s 100m hurdles field at the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Tune-up meet. The NDSU student got to the line in a windy 13.71 seconds.

At the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VI Championships, in Kansas, Abiane Collymore returned a time of five minutes, 17.34 seconds to seize silver in the women’s 1500m event. The Butler Community College student also earned silver in the 5,000m. She got home in 19:38.28.

In Colorado, Aaron Leung Woo-Gabriel captured the Air Force Twilight Open men’s 200m title in 22.16 seconds. The Wichita State University sprinter clocked 10.96 to secure bronze in the 100m dash.

At the Oxy Invitational, in California, Magnolia Howell was third in the women’s 200m and 400m events. The T&T athlete clocked 23.89 seconds in the 200, and 54.05 in the longer race.

At the Jim Thorpe Open, in Pennsylvania, Shippensburg University sophomore, Steve Waithe jumped 15.13m to finish second in the men’s triple jump.

Osei Alleyne-Forte claimed bronze in the men’s 400m event, at the Lone Star Conference Championships, in Texas. The Abilene Christian University sophomore got home in 48.09 seconds. In the 200m Alleyne-Forte was fifth in heat three and 19th overall in 22.51.

At the Kehoe Twilight Meet, in Maryland, University of Maryland senior, Shawn David was third in the men’ 400m in 49.61 seconds.

Chelsi Campbell finished fifth in the women’s 400m, at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, in Maryland. The University of Delaware freshman clocked 56.75 seconds. Campbell was 12th overall in the 200m in a windy 25.18.

And at the Northeast Conference Championships, in New Jersey, Long Island University (Brooklyn Campus) junior, Kervin Morgan was 10th in the men’s 200m and 400m events, clocking 22.35 and 49.72.

Two weekends ago, Annie Alexander and Emanuel Mayers were victorious at the Samford Multi & Invitational meet, in Alabama.

Alexander won the women’s discus and shot put events. She threw the discus 51.12m, and put the shot 16.30m.

Mayers topped the men’s 400m hurdles field in 51.34 seconds.

At the Bobcat Classic, in Texas, Texas A&M University student, Janeil Bellille clocked 57.34, for gold in the women’s 400m hurdles.

Florida International University (FIU) sprinter, T’Keyah Dumoy won the South Florida Multi-Cultural Games women’s 100m “B” race in a windy 11.83 seconds.

At the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, in California, Geronne Black finished third in the women’s 100m dash. The Portland State University student clocked 11.71.

And in Pennsylvania, Waithe was second in the Shippensburg Paul Kaiser Classic men’s triple jump event with a 15.30m effort.
