Finland’s Tero Pitkamaki secured the runner-up spot with an 82.18m throw. Norway’s double Olympic champion Andreas Thorkildsen finished third with an 81.51m effort, edging Germany’s reigning world champion Matthias De Zordo (81.49m) into fourth. Uzbekistan’s Ivan Zaytsev (81.37m) was fifth.

Walcott fouled his first attempt, yesterday, but followed up with a 77.20m throw in the second round. The 20-year-old field athlete fouled again in round three, and then threw 76.77m in the fourth round. It was in round five that Walcott landed the spear 79.79m. And in the sixth and final round, he threw 76.83m.

Vesely produced his winning throw in the third round of the competition.

The Doha meet was Walcott’s second outing this season. He opened his 2013 campaign two Fridays ago with victory at the inaugural TnT Elite Twilight Games, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Walcott threw 84.39m at the Twilight Games, the throw earning him fifth spot on the 2013 world performance list. Following yesterday’s meet in Qatar, Vesely is now fifth on the performance list, and Walcott is sixth.

Walcott’s next scheduled outing is next Saturday, May 18, at the Shanghai Diamond League meet, in China.
