Lendore, Davis, McKnight strike gold

Trinidad and Tobago athletes, Deon Lendore and Wayne Davis II were golden at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in Missouri, USA, yesterday.

Lendore earned the men’s 400 metres title, the Texas A&M University sophomore getting home in a fast 45.02 seconds.

Lendore led all qualifiers into the final with a 46.19 run in the preliminary round. Another T&T quartermiler, University of Florida’s Jovon Toppin was ninth overall in 47.47, just missing out on a spot in the eight-man championship race.

Davis, a junior at Texas A&M, clocked 13.46 seconds for gold in the men’s 110m hurdles. In the qualifying round, he got to the line in 13.45.

There was gold too for Sparkle McKnight, the University of Arkansas junior winning the women’s 400m hurdles title in a personal best 55.71 seconds.

McKnight also competed in the women’s 400m flat event, bagging bronze in 53.01.

Auburn University’s Kai Selvon produced a 23.23 seconds run to cop fifth spot in the women’s 200m final.

University of Georgia student, Hilenn James finished fifth in the women’s shot put with a 16.18 metres throw. And in the discus, James threw 46.35m to cop 10th spot.

Louisiana State University (LSU) sprinter, Shermund Allsop finished ninth overall in the men’s 200m in 21.09 seconds. In the men’s 100m, University of Tennessee sophomore Jamol James finished 12th overall in a wind-assisted 10.38 seconds, while Allsop was 21st in a windy 10.49.

James produced a wind-aided 6.60m leap for 18th spot in the men’s long jump. Auburn’s Gabriela Cumberbatch was 23rd overall in the women’s 400m hurdles in one minute, 03.07 seconds. And in the women’s 100m preliminaries, Selvon was eliminated via the false start route.
