Tobago fancy Atlantic chances

Newsday :: 22.05.2013

TOBAGO EDUCATION District are coming to reclaim the crown they won on two occasions (2008 and 2009), when the Atlantic National Primary School Track and Field Championships takes place today, from 9.30 am, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

But they will have a tough task on their hands when they face off against perennial champions Port- of-Spain and Environs, to renew a rivalry which was tense last year, when Port-of-Spain held off the challenge to prevail on the final standings.

North Eastern Education District has sprung into prominence over the past five years and are expected to go very close. They have made a name for themselves in the distant event and National 3k race over the past five years and anticipate a big showing today. They are keen on landing their first National title.

East St George Education District now have the knowledgeable Cheryl Ann-Wilkinson at the helm.

This School Supervisor Three was pivotal on four of Port-of- Spain and Environs successes in the past few years.

East St George has won the title on eight occasions and this year could be a turning point for them, under chairman Anthony Baptiste.

Port-of-Spain and Environs have won the championship on 34 occasions in the 49 years of the competition.

The champion district look set to secure its 23rd title in 25 years if coach Abeyola Akowe is correct. She intimated that the District is ready to defend its title today.

With the threat that Port-of-Spain’s dominance would be halted by Tobago, East St George or North Eastern, Akowe did not look perturbed but said, “we have a balanced team and this will prove critical to winning the championship.”

As to the relays which Port-of- Spain dominate, she intimated, “We have been doing all right and I think we could do very well (today).”

She added, “St Patrick will be a very tough rival and so, too, is Caroni which has one of the best Under-15 boys in the country. Coach of Caroni Darryl Luke is confident that his District will go well as we also expect a big show from Victoria which is being handled by Gunness Persad.”
