Newsday :: 23.05.2013

Trinidad and Tobago sprinter, Michelle Lee Ahye, placed a disappointing fifth in the Women’s 100m final at the IAAF World Challenge Beijing in China on Tuesday. The local athlete stopped the clock at 11.40 as Nigerian Blessing Okagbare powered to victory emphatically in a fast 11.04.

Coming in second was American Mikele Barber who clocked 11.30 while Ruddy Zang Milama of Gabon crossed the line third in 11.32.

It was an American one-two finish in the male equivalent with former Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin earning the top honours. Gatlin blew away the field with a 9.91 finish while his compatriot Mike Rodgers followed in 9.96. Bingtian Su of China grabbed the bronze in a time of 10.06.

There was no stopping the Americans in the Women’s 200m with Allyson Felix (22.36), LaShauntea Moore (22.85) and Ebony Floyd (23.19) sweeping the medals in that order. Felix, a four-time Olympic gold medallist, has been in scintillating form and looks unbeatable over 200m.

In the Men’s 200m, former Olympic 400m champ, La Shawn Merritt showed his prowess in the shorter distance with a golden 20.40 performance. Jeremy Dodson, also of the USA, came second in 20.62 while Zhenye Xie of the host country followed in 20.66.
