Wayne Davis II was in fine form on the weekend, clocking an impressive 13.27 seconds to top the men’s 110 metres hurdles field at the NCAA Division I West Preliminary meet, in Texas, USA.

However, a following wind marginally above the 2.0 metres per second allowable limit robbed the Texas A&M University student of a new Trinidad and Tobago record.

Davis was one-tenth of a second faster than his own 13.37 national standard, but was aided by a 2.1 wind. In the qualifying round, he had clocked 13.76, into a 1.2 metres per second headwind.

Another T&T athlete, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior, Durell Busby was 16th overall in 13.93. The top 12 qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships.

Texas A&M sophomore, Deon Lendore produced the third fastest time of his career, 45.10 seconds, to finish first in the men’s 400m.

University of Arkansas junior, Sparkle McKnight booked her ticket to the NCAA Championships with a 56.95 seconds clocking in the women’s 400m hurdles. She finished second in her heat to advance automatically.

And in the women’s 400m, Washington State University senior, Shawna Fermin clocked 53.16 seconds to finish third in her heat, the placing earning her automatic qualification.

University of Minnesota senior, Alena Brooks returned a time of two minutes, 06.25 seconds, for 15th spot overall in the women’s 800m.

North Dakota State University’s Deborah John was 15th in the women’s 100m hurdles in a personal best 13.48 seconds. Portland State University’s Geronne Black was 27th in the women’s 100m in a wind-assisted 11.62. And Baylor University student, Gavyn Nero finished 30th overall in the men’s 800m in 1:50.61.

At the NCAA Division 1 East Preliminary meet, in North Carolina, Kai Selvon qualified for the women’s 200m event at the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish in her heat. The Auburn University student got to the line in 23.10 seconds.

In the 100m dash, however, Selvon was eliminated via the false start route. She had advanced past the first round with a runner-up finish in her heat in 11.40.

Hilenn James just missed out on a top-12 finish and a trip to the NCAA Championships when she finished 13th in the women’s shot put. The University of Georgia student threw the iron ball 15.76 metres.

Shermund Allsop was 20th overall in the men’s 100m in a wind-aided 10.51 seconds. The Louisiana State University (LSU) sprinter had clocked 10.43 in the opening round to finish 24th. University of Tennessee’s Jamol James was 32nd in 10.47, and did not advance.

Allsop clocked 21.34 seconds, for 32nd spot in the 200m. And in the men’s 400m hurdles, Delaware State University’s Kevaughn Laviea was 44th in 54.27.

At the NCAA Division II Championships, in Colorado, Shippensburg University sophomore Steve Waithe finished sixth in the men’s triple jump with a 15.40m effort.
