Carifta winners at Junior Champs

Seven reigning Carifta champions are expected to be on show this weekend, at the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) National Junior Track and Field Championships.

Machel Cedenio heads the list of Carifta gold medallists who will be at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, bidding for national titles.

Cedenio grabbed boys’ Under-20 400 metres gold at Carifta 2013, in Nassau, Bahamas, and is tipped to secure the Trinidad and Tobago one-lap title as well.

Mark London, winner of the boys’ Under-20 800m and 1500m titles in Nassau, is likely to attempt a similar double this weekend.

Akeem Marshall, the Carifta Games boys’ Under-20 5,000m champion, is expected to compete in that event at the T&T Junior Championships. The Toco runner may also challenge London for the 1,500m crown.

Jeminise Parris was golden at Carifta 2013 in the girls’ Under-17 300m hurdles. This weekend, she competes in the Under-18 age-group, and will therefore face the starter in a 400m hurdles event. Parris is also expected to be among the starters in the 100m hurdles.

Two-time Carifta Games boys’ under-17 long jump champion, Andwuelle Wright will take on all challengers in the Under-18 long jump.

Another back-to-back Carifta winner, Chelsea James will be on show in the girls’ Under-18 shot put and discus events. James captured the girls’ Under-17 shot put title at Carifta 2012, and repeated the feat in Nassau earlier this year.And in the boys’ Under-20 shot put, Carifta gold medallist Hezekiel Romeo will be on show.

This weekend’s cast also includes Jereem Richards, Jonathan Farinha, Ruebin Walters, Lisa Wickham and Domonique Williams.

Action at the Crawford Stadium starts at 10 a.m. today and tomorrow. Admission is $20.
