Silver for George-Francis, Montique at Masters

Geraldine George-Francis and Andie Montique were denied double gold at the 20th World Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Port Alegre, Brazil yesterday. George-Francis had to settle for second in the women’s 40-44 shot put with a best throw of 11.69m. The placing is a disappointment for George-Francis as she was going for a third straight World Masters shot put crown after wins in the 35-39 division in 2009 and 2011. However, German Sabine Kreiger took the gold with a distance of 12.35 to avenge losing to George-Francis in the javelin finals on Friday. Carolina Verga of Argentina won the bronze (11.11).

Montique was hoping for a sprint double in the men’s 45 to 49 division but was beaten into second. The Bon Accord sprinter clocked 23.40 to finish behind Brazilian Ricardo Itacaramby who won in 22.96 seconds. Will Mc Gee of Great Britain was third. T&T’s medal tally now stands at13 (four gold, six silver and three bronze). Albert St Louis, Lester Herbert, Robert Stevenson, Monica Tang Wing Dave Massiah, and Ahmad As-Siddiq advanced to the finals of the 200m in their age division but failed to medal.

St Louis (M 35-39 100m-23.15), Herbert (M 50-54-24.52), Stevenson (M 75-59-34.11), Tang Wing(W 75-59-39.84) were all fifth in their respective finals while Massiah (M 55-59-26.17) and As-Siddiq (M 65-59-28.05) were sixth. Oswald Rogers did not finish in the men’s 75-79 200m finals while Angela Joseph-Darceuil did not start in the women’s 45-49 200m semifinals after she was 13th overall in the prelims on Monday (29.86). Irvin Thomas bowed out at the semifinal round of the men’s 50-54 200m semis finishing 13th overall (25.64). T&T athletes will be action tomorrow as today is a rest day.
