Trinidad Express :: 24.10.2013

Geraldine George-Francis won her third medal at the 20th World Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, yesterday.

The Trinidad and Tobago athlete took the bronze medal in the women’s 40-44 discus with a throw of 36.80 metres, adding to her javelin gold and shot put silver. Taking the top spot in the discus was Daniela Bettia Schardt of Germany (44.20m), ahead of Kati Siltovourvi of Finland (43.47m).

George-Francis’ triple medal haul is her second at a global meet after she won the shot put and javelin and finished second in the discus in the 35-39 category at the 2010 World Indoor Masters Championships in Kamloops, Canada. She now has a total of 12 World Championship medals.

T&T athletes have so far captured 12 medals in Porto Alegre--four gold, four silver, four bronze. The four gold medallists are George-Francis (women’s 40-44 javelin), Andie Montique (men’s 45-49 100m), Gwendolyn Smith (women’s 45-49 javelin) and Rodney Liverpool (men’s 35-39 high jump).
