Walcott wins in Poland

Keshorn Walcott produced the fifth best throw of his career to secure gold in the men’s javelin at the Janusz Sidlo Memorial meet in Sopot, Poland, on Sunday. The 2012 Olympic champion landed the spear 82.90 metres.

Walcott’s personal best is the 84.58m effort that earned gold for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2012 Olympics in London, England. Last year, he came close to that distance, throwing 84.39m in front of his home fans to emerge victorious at the inaugural Twilight Games.

The third best throw of Walcott’s career came on May 21 this year, the 21-year-old Toco athlete hurling the javelin 83.94m to strike gold at the IAAF World Challenge meet, in Beijing, China.

Fourth on the Keshorn Walcott all-time list is another of his throws in the Olympic final two years ago—the 83.51m opening round effort.

On Sunday, Walcott outclassed his rivals as he fine-tuned his preparations for the Commonwealth Games, here in Glasgow, Scotland. The runner-up, Poland’s Lukasz Grzeszczuk could only manage a 77.63m throw. Third spot went to another Pole, Pawel Rozinski (76.46m).

Walcott has bettered the 80-metre mark in three of his six competitions this season. On May 18, at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, in China, he finished seventh with an 81.09m throw. Three days later, Walcott produced the 83.94m effort in Beijing. And on Sunday, he regained his 80+ form with the 82.90m golden throw in Sopot.
