Trinidad Guardian :: 25.01.2015

The athletes, coaches and administrators of the Cougar Track and Field Club were all smiles last Wednesday, when the winners of the inaugural Atlantic Youth Excellence in Sport (YES) Awards were presented at the Hilton Ballroom, Port-of-Spain.

The six-year-old club had every reason to celebrate and be proud after capturing three awards at the gala ceremony which included all the Atlantic Sport Ambassadors.

Cougars athletes Caliyah Wallace and Ethan Forde were named as Youth Champion Male and Female athletes for 2014.

Wallace and Forde both dominated the Under-13 Age Group category, winning in the West Zone Milo Games, The Port-of-Spain Rotary Games and the National Primary School Championship.

Both athletes were adjudged champion male and female athletes at the National Primary School Championships last year where they piloted Port-of-Spain and Environs to their 27th success in 29 years.

The pair was also crowned as Most Oustanding Athletes at the Caribbean Union of Teachers Games (CUT) in 2014.

They were also named as Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2014 by the Port-of-Spain and Environs Education District.

When asked to comment about the performances of his athletes, coach Kelvin Nancoo, who was named as Administrator of the Year at the YES, stated, “I am very happy to have been awarded such an honour. I am very humbled by it. This award does not really belong to me; it belongs to the Port-of-Spain & Environs Sports Council, which work tirelessly for our young athletes.”

He said: “Abeyola Akowe, our coach and IAAF course conductor has done yeoman service for Cougar and she deserves as much credit for our club’s success over the last few years, and maybe more than I do.

“She must be commended for her contribution to the Port-of-Spain & Environ and Cougars. Without her this could not be achieved. I would like to commend Janika Jordan, Tyrell Springer, Karissa Kirton, Reneisha Andrews, Jordan Pope and Shaniqua Baccombe, just to name a few, who have flown the Cougars Flag with excellence.”

When contacted, Akowe said: “I am elated for the athletes. They worked for all their successes and everyone should be happy for them. This is really a a great mark for Port-of-Spain which has a legacy with track and field and Cougars which has now won the Juvenile Championship for the past four years.

“I would like to thank all our parents for the support because the discipline in this club is very high and many fall away. Hopefully, we can repeat this feat next year. My congrats to Caliyah and Ethan once again.”
