Cardona cops second TT Marathon crown

COLOMBIAN Juan Carlos Cardona powered to his second Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon (TTIM) Overall title when he trotted to victory in the 2015 edition from St Mary’s Junction in Freeport, to the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain yesterday.

Cardona, who won the 2013 version and placed third last year, returned to the top of the podium after conquering the 26.2 mile distance in two hours, 21 minutes and 13 seconds. He successfully held off 2014 champion and eventual runner-up, Hillary Kipchirchir Kimaiyo (Kenya), who clocked 2:22.10. Placing third this time around was Mark Chepsee (2:22.17) while Andre Malavier (2:23.59) and Philemon Kipchilat (2:32.15) rounded off the top five finishers.

The first male national marathon runner to cross the finish line was veteran distance runner Curtis Cox, who placed seventh overall in 2:48.12.

Meanwhile, taking top honours in the women’s division was Kenyan Truphena Besienai in two hours, 55 minutes and seven seconds. She powered to victory ahead of Mojica Gonzales (2:58.12) and ousted last year’s winner into third place, Leah Kigen (3:00.16). Rounding off the top five were Christine Regis (3:09.54) while Karen Downey (3:28.32) respectively.
