Thompson latest Atlantic ambassador

Triple Olympic medallist, and one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most successful sprinters Richard Thompson, has joined fellow Olympians swimmer George Bovell and sailor, Andrew Lewis as an Atlantic Sports Ambassador.

A five-time national champion, Thompson is the sixth local athlete to be signed by the LNG producer, Atlantic, as the company strengthens its ongoing commitment to youth and sport development in Trinidad and Tobago.

“I am very excited about this opportunity and to be part of such a great initiative from Atlantic. I started in the sport at the age of 8, and that is where the foundation was laid for my career today. I had a lot of support from so many people in the sporting fraternity, and I believe in paying it forward. Being a part of Atlantic’s Sports Ambassadors Programme opens a window for me to do that”, said Thompson.

Thompson came to national prominence in 2008 when he clocked 9.89 to win the Olympic silver medal in the Men’s 100m final in Beijing, second only to Jamaican world-record holder, Usain Bolt. He anchored the Trinidad and Tobago’s Men’s 4 x 100 m relay team to a silver medal, and would do the same at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany, where the relay team grabbed a bronze medal. Thompson would add another Olympic medal to his tally with a bronze medal in the Men’s 4 x 100m final at the 2012 Summer Games in London.

“Having an athlete of Richard’s calibre as part of our Atlantic Sports Ambassadors Programme is incredibly important as so many young children look for inspiration and encouragement from our senior athletes. Not only is Richard successful on the track, but he is a wonderful role model who can positively reinforce the lessons which Atlantic hopes to instill through our various sporting programmes”, said Atlantic’s CEO Nigel Darlow.

In addition to Bovell and Lewis, the sprinter also joins cricketers, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard and Merissa Aguilleira in the Atlantic Sports Ambassador Programme.
