St Clair sizzles at Carifta trials

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 07.03.2015

Jacob St Clair stamped his class on the 2015 Carifta trials with a sizzling one-lap run, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

St Clair dominated the Boys Under-18 400 metres final. The Abilene athlete went to the front of the field, and enjoyed a comfortable cushion coming off the final turn. He opened the gap on the home straight for a resounding triumph in 47.46 seconds—well inside the 48.90 qualifying standard. St Clair’s Abilene teammate, Judah Taylor clocked 49.60 to finish a distant second.

Also impressive over one lap was Renee Stoddard. The Speed Factory runner won the Girls Under-18 400m in 56.43 seconds to join the list of qualifiers.

Seven athletes achieved qualifying standards yesterday, Toco Titans thrower Akidah Briggs leading the way with a 14.45 metres winning throw in the Girls Under-18 shot put and a 36.42m second-placed effort in the javelin. Zenith’s Asha James topped the javelin with a 38.90m throw.

Chelsea James made light work of the 38.00m Girls Under-20 discus standard, landing the implement 43.98m for an easy victory.

Toco TAFAC’s Ayana Glasgow and Abilene’s Isaiah Taylor complete the list of day one qualifiers. Glasgow’s 37.43m effort earned her the top spot in the Girls Under-20 javelin, while Taylor threw the iron ball 16.00m to triumph in the Boys Under-18 shot put.

But while the throwers enjoyed conditions at the Crawford Stadium, some of the sprinters and jumpers would feel aggrieved. There were 15 instances of “qualifying” standards being voided by illegal following winds.

In all three rounds of the Boys Under-18 100m dash, Zenith’s Akanni Hislop and Tyrel Edwards of Toco Titans were robbed by the wind. In the final, Hislop was dominant, winning in a windy 10.49 seconds, from Edwards (10.80) and Jalen Purcell (10.82).

The trials continue from 10 a.m. today.
