Lucas headlines Falcon Games

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 26.03.2015

Josanne Lucas will be one of the star attractions at the 2015 Falcon Games, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, this weekend.

Lucas is listed for action in Sunday’s women’s 100 metres hurdles, and may also be a starter in tomorrow’s 400m hurdles. Lucas, a member of the host club Falcons, captured bronze for Trinidad and Tobago in the one-lap hurdles at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

Nineteen-year-old Venezuelan Genesis Romero is expected to challenge Lucas for the sprint hurdles title. That race could also feature teenager Jeminise Parris, who will represent T&T at next weekend’s Carifta Games in St Kitts and Nevis.

Another key clash on Sunday will come in the men’s 100m dash. Former world junior champion Darrel Brown is listed to compete, and will go into the race as favourite. However, he could face a stiff challenge from Marcus Duncan, who was also a junior standout in his teen years.

The men’s 100m entry list also includes T&T’s top junior sprinter, Carifta-bound Jonathan Farinha, double Olympic sprint relay medallist Emmanuel Callender, 19-year-old Barbadian Levi Cadogan and Suriname’s Ifrish Alberg.

Romona Modeste and Alena Brooks are set to duel in Sunday’s women’s 400m event. And in the men’s one-lap, Kyle Greaux is likely to be a contender.

Brooks is tipped for top honours in tomorrow’s women’s 800m, while Modeste squares off against Lisa Wickham in the 200m. The men’s 800m will feature Kendis Bullard, who may also be a starter in the 1500m.

Andwuelle Wright will use the men’s long jump competition as preparation for his medal bid at Carifta 2015. Shakiel Waithe will be on show in the men’s javelin. Carifta athletes Portious Warren and Chelsea James do battle in the women’s shot put. And para athlete Akeem Stewart throws in the men’s shot put.

Up to press time, last night, there was no confirmation on the participation of 2013 IAAF World Championship men’s 400m hurdles gold medallist Jehue Gordon.

Falcon Games action gets going at five o’clock this afternoon. Starting time tomorrow and Sunday is 9.30 a.m.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for three o’clock tomorrow afternoon.

Admission to the Crawford Stadium today is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Tomorrow and Sunday, adults pay $40 and children, $20.
