TT capture three silver medals at CARIFTA

AKIDAH BRIGGS, Jacob St Clair and Akanni Hislop all claimed silver medals yesterday, on the second day of the 44th CARIFTA Track and Field Championships at the Silver Jubilee Stadium, Basseterre, St Kitts yesterday.

Briggs was the first Trinidad and Tobago athlete to medal at the Games, as she placed second in the Girls Under-18 shot put with a best effort of 15.09 metres yesterday morning.

Jamaica’s Sahjay Stevens set a new CARIFTA mark, en route to gold in 16.31 metres (erasing Trinidad and Tobago’s Chelsea James’ previous standard of 16.12m) while Laquell Harris of the Bahamas was third in 14.54m. Another TT entrant, Peaches Stewart, was 12th in 11.61m.

Last evening, in the Boys Under-18 400 metres, St Clair got silver in 46.73 seconds. A pair of Jamaicans got the other two medals - Christopher Taylor won in 46.64 while Devaughn Ellington was third in 47.42.

And Hislop, in the Boys Under-18 100m, crossed the line in a time of 10.47 seconds, trailing Bahamas’ Javan Martin who clocked 10.41. Tyreke Wilson of Jamaica was third in 10.56.

Renee Stoddard was sixth in the Girls Under-18 400m in 55.95; Jamaica’s Junelle Broomfield (53.48) and Shanique Walker (54.23) finished one-two while Grenada’s Meleni Rodney (54.56) was third.

Omari Benoit finished seventh in the boys Under-20 high jump with a best effort of two metres flat; Christoffe Bryan of Jamaica triumphed in a CARIFTA Games equalling-record leap of 2.21m, followed by Laquarn Nairn of the Bahamas (2.14m) and Ace Louis of St Lucia (2.11m).

Another seventh-place finish went to Kenejah Williams, in the boys Under-20 discus, who threw 44.36m. The gold medal went to Demar Gayle of Jamaica (53.45m), ahead of joint runners-up Josh Boateng of Grenada and Drexel Maycock (51.14m).

Charisma Taylor of the Bahamas won the Girls Under-18 long jump in 5.93m, followed by Kieshonna Brooks of St Kitts/Nevis (5.72m) and Zainy Nelzon of Suriname (5.42m), with TT’s Chevelle McPherson seventh (4.85m).

In the Boys Under-20 1500m, Shevon Parks of Jamaica (three minutes 56.69 seconds), and the Barbados pair of Raheem Skinner (3:58.19) and Joshua Hunte (3:59.39) took the medals, while the TT duo of Ashton Gill (4:08.10) and Iley Bruce (4:14.30) were seventh and eighth respectively.

On Friday evening, Alisha St Louis placed sixth in the girls Under-18 triple jump, in 11.56m. The Barbadian Taylor got gold in 12.01m, followed by Suriname’s Nelson (11.88m) and Nichioner George of Grenada (11.75m).
