Newsday :: 20.04.2015

BUDDING NATIONAL javelin prospect, Shakiel Waithe, continued his dominance on the local field athletics circuit when he propelled the spear to a golden mark of 71.01 metres at the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) President’s Classic which launched off at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Saturday.

The 20-year old Rebirth representative threw 69.57m on his first attempt and then followed up with his golden throw of 71.07m on the second. He however, fouled out his remaining four throws. On Waithe’s second attempt, as the spear pierced the northern air, spectators were wowed by the youngster’s impressive distance, with some drawing comparison and optimistic hopes to reigning Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott.

Receiving silver in this event at the one-day meet was UTT Fast Track’s Andwele Korede (56.32m) while Warriors’ Precious George recorded a distance of 51.88m respectively.

In other events, 2008 Olympic 4x100m silver medallist Emmanuel Callender (Memphis Pioneers), sprinted to gold in 10.23 seconds of the Men’s 100m Open. He outlasted eventual silver medallist Josh Hamilton (UTT Fast Track) 10.52 and third placed Courtney Bascombe (Memphis Pioneers) 10.65.
