Holassie series continues Sunday

The 13-part Ronnie Holassie Road Race Series continues this weekend with the Ramadhar Ragoonath 3K Fun Walk and Run.

Part one, the Ronnie Holassie 5K, took place on March 30, in Cunaripo. Cuban Livan Reyes won the men’s race in 15:24.

First among the women was local road running queen, Tonya Nero, who completed the course in 17:45.

Part two, the Ragoonath 3K, starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Hart Road Recreation Ground, 5½-mile mark, Plum Mitan Road, and finishes at the Plum Mitan Presbyterian School.

Runners can pay the $10 registration fee at the start line, from 1 p.m. on race day, Prizes and refreshments will be given out after the race. Among the prizes on offer is a trophy for the school with the most finishers.

According to a press release, issued yesterday: “The main purposes of these races are to bring unity in the various villages, to sensitise all to the importance of physical fitness, and last but not least to scout for road and track running talent.

“Holassie came to prominence as a 16-year-old,” the release continued, “when he won the 10K organised by the T&T Marathon. He was a Carifta Games double gold medallist and went on to represent T&T at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Holassie holds the national and Anglo-Caribbean record for the marathon, 2:13:3, which he set at the 2001 Cleveland Marathon.”
