Bledman disqualified in Diamond League

Keston Bledman seemed to have been T&T’s most successful athlete in Diamond League action yesterday, but his later disqualification from the men’s 100 metres which initially closed in second place after running under protest. Bledman competed in the 2015 Adidas Grand Prix race under protest and finished second in a dramatic close of .01 seconds behind USA’s Tyson Gay, who won the race in 10.12 seconds.

The local sprinter had false started but protested and the organisers allowed him to run but after reviewing they decided to disqualify Bledman.

Jamaica’s Nesta Carter, who placed third initially in 10.15, was then promoted to second, while his compatriot Nickel Ashmeade moved up to fifth after finishing sixth in 10.28. Meanwhile, Jehue Gordon closed in sixth place in the men’s 400m hurdles, clocking 49.31 seconds. Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson won the race in 48.48.

Culson and the top five finishers recorded season bests.

LJ van Zyl of South Africa finished runner up in 48.78 seconds, ahead of Jeffrey Gibson of the Bahamas, who finished third in 48.97. In the non-Diamond League 400m race, Renny Quow recorded a season best 45.57 seconds to take a fifth place finish, just ahead of T&T team-mate Machel Cedenio, who finished sixth in 45.89 seconds. Wayde van Kiekerk (South Africa) won the race in 44.24 seconds, while three-time Olympic medalist Chris Brown of the Bahamas placed second in 44.74. Tony McQuay clocked 45.26 to finish third.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste and American Tianna Bartoletta tied for third place in the women’s 100, both clocking 11.19 seconds, with English Gardner (USA) and Jamaica’s Samantha Henry-Robinson finishing first and second in 11 and 11.08 seconds, respectively.
