Under-14 athletes excel at NAAA Juvenile Championship

Newsday :: 16.06.2015

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO’S up-and-coming female athletes outshone their male counterparts in terms of all-round prowess at the NGC/NAAA Juvenile Championships, held on the weekend at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Competing in the most senior category (Under-14), Patrice Richards, Caliyah Wallace and Rae-Ann Serville showed laudable consistency in both track and field disciplines.

Richards emerged from the two-day championship with the most wins; the Neon Trackers athlete won gold medals in the Long Jump, the 60m Hurdles, the 400m and the 800m flat races, and she won silver medals in the 3kg Shot Put and the 300m Hurdles.

Rae-Ann Serville, who beat Richards to the line in the 300m final, set a championship mark of 45.60 seconds in the process. The Memphis Pioneer also won gold in the High Jump, and she picked up silver medals in the 60m Hurdles, the 200m and 400m and the Mixed Four by 100 Relay, in which she ran the opening leg for Memphis.

Not to be outdone, Caliyah Wallace won gold in the 100m and 200m sprints and picked up a third gold medal in the Mixed Four by 100 Relay, running the second leg for club, Cougars.

Among the Senior Boys, Zenith’s Justin Guy won gold in the 300m and silver medals in the Long Jump and High Jump events.

Cougars’ Jordan Pope showed strength in the middle-distances, claiming gold in the 800m and 1000m; he was also part of the Cougars team that won the 800m Medley Relay.

Pope’s Cougars teammate Ethan Forde also won two golds, taking the 400m on Saturday in 55.95 seconds and running the anchor leg in Cougars’ 800m Sprint Medley Relay victory; Forde also ran third in the Boys 200m final.

The next major event for the NAAA will be the Sagicor Open Senior Championship, to be run off from June 26-28 at the Crawford Stadium.
