Andrews takes long jump honours

Joel Andrews, of D’Abadie Progressive Athletic Club (DPAC), denied Avindale Smith, of Abilene Wildcats, victory in the Boys Under-15 Long Jump (Heptathlon) on day one of the two-day NGC/NAAA Combined Championships yesterday staged by the National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Woodbrook. Smith, dubbed a favourtite at this weekend’s Games, hoped to emerge victorious in the heptathlon before moving on to defend his pentathlon title.

But competition in the day saw Smith having to settle for second spot to Andrews, who he pushed in a similar position at the at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Age Group Trials. Andrew recorded a distance of 5.63m in the final round of competition amassing a total of 742 points, while his rival achieved a distance of 5.56m. His day’s total was 729 points.

The Boys Under-20 100m title was won by Tauren Smith, in 11.12 seconds, while Shevon Smith of Sangre Grande SE in second. Meanwhile David Niles of Speed Factory clinched victory in 10.99 seconds in the men’s 100m. Second place went to Victor Isaac of Toco Tafac (11.08). Kevin Roberts of Speed Factory was third. His time was 11.09.

Victory in the U-18 100m dash went to Nathanael Charles of Sangre Grande SE. His time was 11.94 seconds. Competition continues today with athletes vying for top honours in the 80m hurdles, long jump and 1,000m.
