Rotich wins OWTU 20K

The Oil Field Workers Trade Union (OWTU) hosted a 20-kilometre run and walk race last Friday (Labour Day). The race comprised of three events that were contested simultaneously, including a 5km and 20km run, as well as a 20km walk.

The 5km run, which catered to a younger group of athletes, was won by 15-year-old Ricardo Lova, of Mayaro Athletic Club, in a time of 17 minutes, 17 seconds. In his wake was Tyler Austin also 15, of Petrotrin Palo Seco. He crossed the line ten seconds after Lova. In third was Xavion York, Austin's clubmate, who clocked 17.39.

Bryan Francis was first to the line in the 20km walk. The Point Fortin Road Runners athlete clocked 2.04.36, which was more than four minutes ahead of his nearest rival, Anthony Francis of Santa Flora, who clocked 2.08:58. Eustus Weekes clocked 2.12.39 to finish third.

Kenyan Kenneth Rotich won the toughest race of them all in the 20km run. He stopped the clock at 1.05.59, with Cuban Liva Luque finishing over three minutes later in 1.08:17. Kelvin Johnson finished in third. The 35-year-old Guyanese finished clocking 1.11:40, to round up the top three.
