Olympic champion Walcott impresses with ‘iron-spear’

Trinidad Guardian :: 01.07.2015

Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (Rebirth) shone on the final day (Sunday) of the NGC/Sagicor/NAAA Open Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo when he set a new T&T all-comers record in winning the men’s javelin. Walcott threw the ‘iron spear’ out to 84.84 metres on his first effort to take the lead and smashed the previous best mark set on T&T soil, his own 84.39m in 2013. The 22-year-old also improved the previous Championship record of 75.00m established in 2012.

Walcott of Toco unleashed a 82.71 throw in the second round before passing on his remaining four throws. Both efforts were over the World Championships qualifying standard of 82.00m and below his four week national record of 86.43m.

Last year’s World Junior fifth place finisher Shakeil Waithe (Rebirth) took the silver with a personal best of 77.30. Finishing third was four time Carifta champion Anderson Peters (GRN) in a national record of 74.20. The 2013 World Youth ninth placer improved the Spice Island mark by 9cm.

Fifteen year old Carifta boys under 18 champion and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) was fifth with 63.77m. Horsford achieved 70.73 with the 700g at the Carifta.
