Sealy snares silver at CAC Age Group

Team title for T&T girls

Antonia Sealy seized silver for Trinidad and Tobago in the Sagicor Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Age Group Championship girls' 13-14 heptathlon, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

Sealy was solid on day two, clocking 9.65 seconds in the 60 metres hurdles, clearing the bar at 1.40 metres in the high jump, throwing 52.26m in the ball throw, and returning a time of three minutes, 33.96 seconds in the 1,000m to finish with 4,139 points.

St Lucia's Julien Alfred was a runaway winner of the girls' 13-14 heptathlon, accumulating a Championship record total of 4,466. Barbadian Charissa Moore (4,057) claimed bronze, while fourth spot went to T&T's Safiya John (3,973).

Jordan Pope produced a courageous run in the boys' 11-12 pentathlon 1,000m, finishing second in 3:09.01 to notch 625 points. With that clocking, Pope catapulted himself onto the podium, the T&T athlete bagging bronze with 3,155 points.

Jamaica swept the top two positions. Terrique Stennett struck gold with 3,286 points, while silver went to Mekale Gordon (3,234).

While Pope moved up from fifth to third with his heroics in the 1,000m, his T&T teammate Daniel Qiu clocked 4:12.03 for just 259 points, and slipped from third to ninth. Qiu ended the five-discipline event with 2,887 points.

In the boys' 13-14 heptathlon, T&T athletes Avindale Smith (4,824) and Joel Andrews (4,440) finished fifth and 16th, respectively. Jamaicans Shaquille Lowe (4,880) and Antonio Watson (4,861) captured the top two spots, while third spot went to Barbadian Enrique Babb (4,855).

Malika Coutain was third ahead of the 800m, the final discipline in the girls' 11-12 pentathlon. But the T&T athlete could only manage a 3:06.38 clocking and 277 points, and slipped to ninth spot with a total of 2,407 points. Her teammate, Xea Bruce got home in 2:42.34, earning 449 points and a grand total of 2,411. Bruce jumped from 14th to eighth on the overall standings.

Bahamian Paige Stuart accumulated 2,614 points to grab gold, ahead of Curacao's Joanna Benita (2,601) and Barbadian Julisa Jones-Smith (2,508).

T&T emerged as overall girls' team champions with 12,930 points, and girls' 13-14 heptathlon team champs with 8,112.
