Trinidad and Tobago will bid for precious metal in the Pan American Games men’s 4x100 metres event, in Toronto, Canada, today. The championship race is scheduled for 8.05pm.

In the second semifinal, late yesterday, Mikel Thomas, Rondel Sorrillo, Emmanuel Callender and Dan-Neil Telesford teamed up for victory in 38.52 seconds. Barbados (38.65) and Dominican Republic (38.67) were second and third, respectively.

In the opening semi, Antigua and Barbuda won in a Games record time of 38.14, forcing United States (38.29) into second spot. Canada (38.39) finished third.

The T&T combination of Kamaria Durant, Kelly-Ann Baptiste, Semoy Hackett and Reyare Thomas bowed out in the qualifying round of the women’s 4x100m event. The second exchange, between Baptiste and Hackett, was not completed, and T&T were non-finishers in the five-team race.

T&T had a strong line-up, and could have been challengers for the top spot in the second semifinal. Instead, United States won easily, getting the baton round the track in 43.07 seconds for a huge cushion on second-placed Bahamas (44.34). However, the Americans were subsequently disqualified, and the Bahamians were promoted to first. Cuba (44.58) and Ecuador (44.64) secured the other automatic qualifying berths up for grabs in the race.

Jamaica won heat one in 42.82 seconds, from Canada (42.98) and Brazil (43.24).
