UWI stages half-marathon on Sunday

Trinidad Express :: 18.10.2015

This year’s 12th annual UWI SPEC International Half-Marathon, with a likely field of about 1200, has attracted a host of top runners, including 2015 Pan Am Games marathon gold medallist Richer Perez of Cuba.

Ahead of Sunday’s race, technical director Raymond Chin Asang felt they had already assembled one of the best ever fields. “The front of the race is superior or comparable to any road race in the Caribbean. As an international event, UWI SPEC stands out in the Caribbean,” Chin Asang said.

Five time-time Jamaican marathon champion Rupert Gree, last year’srunner-up, along with his countryman Kirk Brown, the 2015 Caricom 10K runner-up, and St Lucia’s Michael Biscette, who placed second at the 2015 Fort de France Half-Marathon, and defending champion Daniel Chavez da Silva of Brazil, who clocked 1:08:18 last year, are also expected to face the starter.

Pedro Espinoza Perez will be the first Mexican to run UWI SPEC, while Colorado-based Kenneth Rotich will be the Kenyan factor in the race. Among the women, it is expected to be a three-way battle between defending champion Caroline Kiptoo of Kenya, 2012 and 2013 champion T&T’s Tonya Nero and Yailen Garcia of Cuba.
