Da Silva back to defend UWI title

...two-time champ Nero looking to reclaim top spot among women

Sean Taylor :: Trinidad Express :: 23.10.2015

The 12th annual UWI SPEC International Half-Marathon will run off tomorrow from 5.30 a.m., and the big question will be whether local distance runner Tonya Nero will be able to streak past the finish line in first place among the women this year.

The 26-year-old Maracas, St Joseph resident is among the top three contenders to take the women’s division of the race, along with Caroline Kiptoo of Kenya and Yailen Garcia of Cuba.

Vetran Garcia, 35, won the La Havana Marathon clocking two hours, 38.12 seconds in April 2004. The Kenyan Kiptoo is the defending UWI Half-Marathon champion, while T&T’s Nero won the event back-to-back in 2012 and 2013.

Nero races internationally, and her career has seen her acquit herself well on the US circuit, and even take her as far as Copenhagen, Denmark, to hit the asphalt. It is on the domestic landscape, however, where the two-time UWI winner is the most dominant.
