Newsday :: 20.11.2015

TRACK ATHLETES Machel Cedenio, Kelly-Ann Baptiste and the national men’s 4 x 400m relay squad, Shot Putter Cleopatra Borel and gymnast Thema Williams are among the nominees for the annual Caribbean Sports Journalists’ Association (CASJA) Awards 2015.

Forty-four nominees in six categories were listed by the Nassau, Bahamas-based CASJA on Wednesday; the winners will be announced on Monday.

Heading the list are Jamaican triple world record-holder Usain Bolt and his compatriot Shelly- Ann Fraser-Pryce, the two-time Olympic and triple world 100 metre champion.

The list also includes athletes from the Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba and Grenada and spans athletics, cricket, cycling, football, gymnastics, netball, sailing, swimming and volleyball. The six categories are: Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Team of the Year (Male and Female) and Rising Star of the Year (Male and Female).

Bolt, who retained his 100m, 200m and 4x100m titles at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, is virtually unchallenged for the Sportsman of the Year award. Fraser-Pryce’s main challengers for Sportswoman of the Year will be fellow-Jamaicans Stafanie Taylor (Cricket), Alia Atkinson (Swimming) and Danielle Williams (Athletics).

TT’s best award prospect is the 4x400m relay team in the Male Team of the Year category. The squad won gold at the Pan Am Games in Toronto and silver in Beijing. Cedenio was the anchor in both finals, while other members included Renny Quow, Lalonde Gordon and Deon Lendore. However, Jamaica’s sprint quartet of Nesta Carter, Asafa Powell, Nickel Ashmeade and Bolt are strong favourites for the team award after winning the 4x100m gold in Beijing in the year’s fastest- 37.36 seconds.

Other TT contenders include the World Championship women’s 4x100m bronze medallists- Kelly-Ann Baptiste, Michelle-Lee Ahye, Reyare Thomas and Semoy Hackett, as well as the senior and Under-20 national football teams.

Cyclist Akil Campbell has been nominated for the Male Rising Star and gymnast Williams is listed in the female category.
