THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) “has stated as a clear mandate, its desire to cultivate a cadre of student athletes that can pursue both sport and academia through their university experience.” Making this pronouncement was Major David Benjamin, director of UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SP EC) on Wednesday evening.

Benjamin was speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, at the UWI SP EC Indoor Facility, for the UWI SP EC International Half Marathon.

“We, at the Sport Fitness and Athletic Development Department understand this goal and remain supportive in this 21st century dynamic,” he continued.

Benjamin noted, “from time immemorial, toughness, mental agility and resilience are all distinguishing qualities admired in leaders. We are hoping that our student athletes evolve into the distinguished leaders of tomorrow.” He added, “we will continue to encourage other students to participate in our Half Marathon every year. In the women’s category, Caroline Kiptoo of Kenya triumphed in 1:17.54, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Tonya Nero (1:18.54) and Cuba’s Yailen Garcia (1:24.41).

“As our event grows, we continue to learn from our experiences and challenges, and we have continued to provide the level of service and professionalism that this event has been heralded and known for over the years,” Benjamin stated. “I think, collectively, the management team of the event accomplished that, and for that, I thank you.” He also revealed, “for the second time in our history, we conducted random drug testing, post-event, and I am happy to report that, again, all persons tested returned a negative result.” Benjamin extended his gratitude to sponsors First Citizens, SM Jaleel, Digicel, VEMCO and Sports and Games for their assis
