Cox victorious in Barbados

APPARENTLY Curtis Cox just couldn't wait for the marathon's return. The Run Barbados Marathon Weekend's most coveted prize is finally in Cox's hands as the ever-enduring Trinidadian slammed a 38-man field to capture his first full marathon on Sunday when the event made its big comeback after a three-year hiatus.

With his second-place finish from 2011 (the last running of the full marathon) still fresh in mind, the veteran 47-year-old made sure to go one better this time, leading the 26-mile event from start to finish before winning in a rather underwhelming time of two hours, 45 minutes and 45 seconds.

“The main thing was to win the race because in 2013 I came second (in the half marathon) and also in 2012 so I wasn't checking on time,” explained a clearly relieved Cox. “I came second twice to Richard Kessio from Kenya and I said once he was not here I would use this as a training run and win the race. So at the six-mile mark I saw I was way behind (record time) so I decided to pace myself and just win the race.”
