The first People’s Choice Award will be distributed today when the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) hosts its 18th Annual Olympic Committee Gala at the Port-of-Spain Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Trinidad on Dock Road, Port-of-Spain, from 6 pm.

Six awards are usually distributed, which includes the Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Junior Sportsman of the Year, Sports Personality of the Year and the Alexander B Chapman Award.

This year the TTOC, led by president Brian Lewis, wanted to give the public more power by getting them involved in the voting process. To facilitate the People’s Choice award the TTOC contracted Tribal Worldwide (Caribbean), a full service digital agency which was responsible for developing an on-line campaign for the award.

Members of the public were allowed to vote once a day until midnight on December 20. The move is seen by the TTOC as a strategic move to explore every positive aspect of the digital experience.

Track and field dominated the awards last year, as the sport took home four of the six awards. Only swimmer George Bovell (swimming) and former national football coach Bertille St Clair won awards outside track and field.

Bovell won the Sports Personality of the Year and St Clair copped the Alexander B Chapman Award for his contribution to sport and Olympism. Track and field may take home the lion’s share of awards again, as javelin thrower Keshorn Walcott, shot putter Cleopatra Borel and 400m runner Machel Cedenio all had top performances during the year.

In July, the senior trio all won gold medals for T&T at the Pan American Games in Canada helping this country to eight medals overall, its best ever showing at the Pan Am Games. Junior athlete Khalifa St Fort, who is coached by local sprint legend Ato Boldon, is the favourite to snatch the Junior Sportswoman of the Year award.

In July, St Fort broke the national Under-18 record in the girls 100m event at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Colombia, stopping the clock at 11.19 seconds.
