Rios returns to defend crown

Donstan Bonn :: Trinidad Express :: 15.01.2016

When participants in the 2016 T&T International Marathon face the starter at St Mary's Junction in Freeport tomorrow, it will be the renewing of a longstanding rivalry between defending champion Juan Carlos Cardona Rios of Colombia and Kenya's Mark Kipkosgei Chepses.

Rios, who clocked two hours, 21 minutes and 13 seconds to clinch last year's race ahead of 2014 champion Hilary Kipchirchir Kimaiyo (2.22:10) and Chepses (2.22:17), was also victorious in 2013 in a time of 2.23:51. However his pair of victories was split by a third place finish in 2014 behind the Kenyan pair of Kimaiyo and Chepses.
