Lendore opens in style

Gold too for Ahye, Sorrillo

Deon Lendore opened his 2016 indoor campaign with victory in the men's invitational 400 metres event, at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in Texas, USA, on Saturday. The Trinidad and Tobago quarter-miler stopped the clock at 46 seconds flat for fourth spot on the world indoor performance list.

Carlyle Roudette finished second in the invitational 400m "B" race and seventh overall in 47.97.

Michelle-Lee Ahye crushed her rivals in the women's invitational 60m final, the T&T track star getting to the line in 7.17 seconds for a huge cushion on second-placed Laverne Jones-Ferrette (7.34) of the US Virgin Islands. Another T&T sprinter, Reyare Thomas finished fourth in 7.44.

Ahye was first in the invitational 200m "B" race and second overall in 23.38 seconds.

Jessica James was 10th fastest in the women's 400m in an indoor best 55.34. Her Abilene Christian University teammate, Sterlen Paul was 14th in the men's 800m in one minute, 54.70 seconds.

Aaliyah Telesford finished 14th overall in the women's 60m preliminaries in 7.65 seconds. Another South Plains College sprinter, Mauricia Prieto clocked 24.62 for 17th spot in the women's 200m. Telesford was 23rd in 24.84.

At the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite, Rondel Sorrillo topped the men's 200m field in 21.02 seconds.

Jarrin Solomon was victorious at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, the T&T athlete winning the men's 400m in 46.43 seconds. Ade Alleyne-Forte was seventh overall in 47.43.

Mikel Thomas picked up bronze in the men's 60m hurdles in a personal best 7.69 seconds. The T&T athlete was seventh in the 60m dash in 6.85. Thomas clocked 6.74 in the preliminaries to equal his PR (personal record), and followed up with 6.75 in the semi-final round.

Emmanuel Callender was ninth fastest in the 60m semis in 6.83 seconds, just missing out on a lane in the final. In the 200m, he was 26th overall in 21.98. And in the women's 200m, New Mexico Junior College's Kayelle Clarke (24.16) and University of Alabama's Domonique Williams (24.42) were 14th and 18th, respectively.

In Ohio, Steve Waithe captured the Akron Invitational men's triple jump title with a 15.83 metres effort.

At the Armory Invitational, in New York, Zakiya Denoon secured college women's 60m bronze, the Monroe College student getting home in 7.41 seconds. University of Miami's Trishelle Leacock was 22nd overall in 7.68.

In the open women's 400m, Kiersten LaRoche earned bronze in 58.02 seconds. In the open 60m dash, LaRoche was eighth in the final in 7.99. She had clocked 7.97 in the preliminary round.

Andre Marcano finished 13th overall in the open men's 60m in 6.85 seconds. Leacock was 22nd in the college women's 200m in 25.00. And in the invitational men's 4x200m relay, a T&T combination of Adrian Crichlow, Isaiah Phillip, Kervin Morgan and Marcano finished fifth in 1:29.13.

At the Grizzly-Buffalo Clash, in Colorado, Micah Ballantyne clocked 22.47 seconds to bag bronze in the men's 200m. The Adams State University sophomore also competed in the 60m dash, finishing fourth in 6.96.

In Indiana, Peli Alzola was 13th overall in the Meyo Invitational women's 200m in 24.62 seconds. The Western Kentucky University student clocked 7.79 for 17th spot in the 60m semis. Alzola had produced a 7.57 run in the opening round.
