Secondary Schools relay tomorrow

Toco Secondary and Queen's Royal College will seek to defend their overall titles at the 2016 Secondary Schools Relay Festival set for the Larry Gomes, Stadium, Malabar, Arima tomorrow.

The action gets underway from 9am. Students will compete in the under 14, under 16, under 18 and under 21 categories where competitors must not attain the maximum age of the category as at December 31 of this year. There is one exception with the under 21 division where athletes must be under the age by July 2016. So far eleven schools have confirmed their participation including Bishop High and Scarborough Secondary from Tobago. The top schools will earn the right to compete at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA from April 28- 30. The schools vying to compete at at the Penn Relays will have to win the Open Boys and Girls 4x100m and 4x400m events which have been added to the original schedule.

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Track and Field Association (TTSST FA) Phillip Allard said the decision was taken after meeting with members of the TTSST FA and officials of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs yesterday. Allard explained that the Ministry will be funding the teams to the Penn Relays but added that since the teams will be competing in High Schools Open 4x100m and 4x400m in the US, his association will have to include the Open to those events.

The original schedule for Thursday's Relays - 4x60m shuttle hurdles, 4x400m (U16, U18, U21), 4x100m, 4x200m (U14, U16, U18, U21), 4x400m (Open) and Medley (Open-1000m:boys, 800m: girls).

At the 2015 Schools Relays, Toco was the top girl school with 196 points while QRC took the boys' equivalent (174). The Toco females swept the rarely run 4x60m hurdles relays taking the girls under 16, under 18 and under 21 events for a clean sweep. The Toco boys also won the under 16, 18 and 21 short hurdles relay. Toco girls also copped the girls under 16 4x400m and girls open 4x800m. The North East Educational District Sports giants were also second in the girls under 18 4x400m, girls under 20 4x100m. QRC copped four gold medals with victories in the boys under 21 4x400m, boys under 16 4x200m and boys under 21 4x200m, boys under 16 4x100m and boys under 18 4x100m.
