Southern Games on today

Trinidad Express :: 12.03.2016

Southern Games 2016, scheduled for a 12.30 p.m. start today at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre, promises to once again deliver noteworthy performances from a complement of local and international athletes and cyclists.

Leading the charge for the foreign contingent will be the United States pair of Mark Henri Allen and Ethan William Clary, a versatile distance runner who has competed over distances from 1,500 metres to 10,000 metres and holds a personal best of 14 minutes, 40.21 seconds over 5,000 metres.

Kirt Anthony Brown of Jamaica and Guyana's middle distance runner Cleveland Forde, a repeat Southern Games 1,500m and 5,000m medallist, are also slated to face the starter.

Fans can expect to see some of the island's top athletes in action, including last year's record-breaking Parapan American Games discuss champion Akeem Stewart.

Cycling has drawn a larger foreign contingent as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA will all be represented.

Suiting up for T&T will be Quincy Alexander, Gavyn Nero, Akil Campbell and Varun Maharajh.

The annual sporting extravaganza is celebrating its 50th anniversary and this year's edition is dedicated to two former national athletes; cyclist Robert "Junior" Farrell, who represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico as well as a number of Pan American Championships and Central American and Caribbean Games, and field athlete Yvonne Mitchell, who held national records in the shot put and discus and was a standout at Southern Games.

The 10,000 metres event will be in honour of Manny Ramjohn while the match sprint will be in honour of Roger Gibbon.

Some of the keynote sponsors are Awardy Hardware, Beacon Insurance, Bike Inn, Blue Waters, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, National Gas Company, National Lotteries Control Board, Petrotrin, Plipdeco, Point Lisas Nitrogen, Strategic Assets Solutions Limited, TECU Credit Union and Trinweld Contracting Services Ltd.
