Ahye runs away with Texas 100

Trinidad Guardian :: 04.04.2016

Michelle-Lee Ahye clocked 11.25 seconds to run away with the women's 100 metres at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at the Mike A Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas in the US on Saturday.

It was the final of four days in the meet which saw a over 7,500 athletes —a record for the meet in its 89th season —compete inside of Myers Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas.

Ahye's performance was one of many that highlighted the event, as a number of athletes broke meet records, set Stadium records and hit Olympic Trials qualifying marks.

She hit the 11.32 mark which is the IAAF Olympic qualifying mark in a race which Khalifa St Fort, the IAAF World Youth Championships silver medallist and the Carifta Games Under-20 champion from last week, returned to action, placing third in 11.39.

Initially, St Fort's participation at the Relays was uncertain after coach Ato Boldon pulled her from competing in the rest of the Caribbean youth meet, revealing after the 100m final that the 18-year-old had been feeling some discomfort on her hip. Alexandria Anderson of the US was second in 11.32. Another Boldon-coached T&T sprinter, Kelly-Ann Baptiste, also had success, crossing in 23.50 (23.498) in the women's 200m to be narrowly edged out by American Ashley Spencer, the World Indoor Championships 400m silver medallist who clocked the same time of 23.50 (23.495), to place third. American Natasha Hastings won in 22.84. Reyare Thomas also competed in the event and placed 14th in 24.49.

Later, Baptiste, Ahye, Thomas and St Fort, running in that order won the women's 4x100 relay in a world leading 43.06 beating the US All Star Red team into second in 43.16 and Axis Athletics into third in 43.83.

T&T's Deborah John just missed on a place among the top three, finishing fourth in the women's 110m hurdles in 13.39.
