Machel Cedenio produced a typically strong finish to win the men's 400 metres event in 44.79 seconds at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Florida, USA, on Friday. The clocking was Cedenio's fastest-ever season-opener, bettering last year's 45.09 run.

The 44.79 scorcher was the fifth fastest time of Cedenio's career, earning the 20-year-old Trinidad and Tobago quarter-miler third spot on the 2016 world outdoor performance list, behind Olympic champion Kirani James (44.36) and his fellow-Grenadian Bralon Taplin (44.41).
