Hislop double

Akili, McKay, Tobago on fire at Secondary Schools Champs

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 27.04.2016

Akanni Hislop completed the Secondary Schools Track and Field Championship boys' 18+ sprint double when he dominated his rivals in the 200 metres final, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, last Thursday.

Hislop came off the bend with a commanding lead, and stayed well in front on the straight, the Bishop's High School (Tobago) sprinter completing victory in 21.43 seconds. Cedros Secondary's Onal Mitchell was a distant second in 22.31, finishing just ahead of St Benedict's College athlete Aaron Brewster (22.34).

Hislop, the reigning Carifta Games boys' under-20 half-lap champion, was among a host of successful Tobago athletes, their performances at the two-day Secondary Schools meet sparking fervent celebrations, first in the stands and then on the track. Green was the colour in the spotlight as Team Tobago drummed and danced without inhibition. And fittingly, DJ Bravo's "Champion" song and dance featured when Tobago was officially declared Champion District.

Anya Akili was even more successful than her Bishop's High teammate, Hislop. In addition to the girls' under-18 hurdles double, Akili won a couple jump titles for a two-day total of four gold medals. Last Wednesday, she disturbed the sand at 5.19 metres for long jump gold, and followed up with a 1.60m clearance in Thursday's high jump. Akili topped the 100m hurdles in 14.49 seconds and the 400m hurdles in one minute, 07.74 seconds.

There were four individual titles too for Shakeem McKay. The Queen's Royal College student struck gold in the boys' under-14 100m and 200m events, clocking 12.09 seconds and 24.26. McKay was also the class of the high jump (1.40m) and long jump (5.01m) fields.

Akidah Briggs swept the girls' 18+ throws. Following her day one victories in the shot put (11.98m) and discus (27.75m) events, the Toco Secondary athlete triumphed in Thursday's javelin with a 38.73m throw.

Signal Hill Secondary's Tyriq Horsford was in a class of his own in the boys' under-18 javelin, the Carifta Games champion winning with a big 63.07m effort.

There were sprint doubles for Point Fortin West Secondary's Maurina Prieto, Scarborough Secondary's Ayla Stanisclaus and Belmont Secondary's Arianne Lucio. Ethan Forde completed the boys' under-16 200/400 double for Fatima College. And there were 400/800 successes for St James Secondary's Kershel McIntyre and St Francois Girls' College student Joanna Rogers.
