Cedenio cops silver at Diamond League

National 400m runner Machel Cedenio won a silver medal in the men's 400-metre event in the first meet of the Diamond League 2016 series in Doha, Qatar, yesterday.

Cedenio, who is set to make his debut at the Olympics when the Rio Games begin in August, ran a season best time of 44.68 seconds running in lane three. Beijing 2008 Olympic gold medal winner LaShawn Merritt of USA won gold in a time of 44.41, while Haroun Abdalleleh of Qatar won bronze in 44.81.

In College action at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University, T&T athletes are displaying some strong performances.

In the women's high jump, Deandra Daniel representing Coppin State University won gold with a leap of 1.71-metres ahead of countrywoman and schoolmate Khemani Roberts. Roberts and Tanise Edwards of Maryland Eastern Shore both cleared the bar at 1.61m, but Edwards had more misses and had to settle for bronze.

In the women's heptathlon, Roberts led after day one with 2,887 points, while Kaitlin Scott of Hampton is second (2,800). Rando Bohler of Coppin State has earned 2,691 points and is third after day one.

The MEAC Championships began on Thursday and finishes today.
