Thomas, Sorrillo shine in US

Mikel Thomas produced two golden runs at the Oxy Invitational track and field meet, in California, USA, last Saturday. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete won the men's 100 metres dash in 10.29 seconds and his specialty event, the 110m hurdles in 13.57.

Jamie Payne finished fifth in the men's 100m "C" race in 10.88 seconds. Magnolia Howell clocked a wind-assisted 24.08 for sixth spot in the women's 200m. And in the 400m, Howell was seventh in 54.52.

Rondel Sorrillo captured the Kentucky Relays men's sprint double. He was first home in the 100m in 10.39 seconds and topped the 200m field in 20.43.

In Texas, Richard "Torpedo" Thompson earned silver in his first 100m outing this season. T&T's triple Olympic silver medallist got to the line in a wind-assisted 10.21 seconds to secure the runner-up spot, behind American Trayvon Bromell (10.00), in the Longhorn Invitational men's century. Thompson finished fourth in the 200m event in a windy 20.98.

Carlyle Roudette picked up silver in the men's 400m in 47.32 seconds. And Deborah John clocked a wind-aided 13.43 for seventh spot in the women's 100m hurdles.

At the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, in North Carolina, Deandra Daniel struck gold in the women's high jump. Daniel cleared the bar at 1.71 metres. Her Coppin State University teammate, Khemani Roberts went over at 1.61m to pick up silver.

Roberts was golden in the heptathlon, accumulating 4,539 points in the seven-discipline event. And in the javelin, she threw 27.72m to finish 14th. Another T&T/Coppin State athlete, Mark London clocked one minute, 51.19 seconds to secure bronze in the men's 800m.

In New York, Andre Marcano emerged victorious in the Tom Farrell Classic men's 100m "B" race in 10.59 seconds. He finished second in the 200m "C" race in 21.87.

At the Southland Conference Championships, in Texas, Abilene Christian University student Jessica James claimed silver in the women's 400m in 54.65 seconds. She was 15th overall in the 200m in 24.75. And Abilene Christian's Sterlen Paul returned a time of 1:54.43 to finish sixth in the men's 800m final.

In South Dakota, Micah Ballantyne secured fifth spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Championship men's 100m final in 10.64 seconds. The Adams State University sophomore was fourth fastest in the 200m preliminaries at 22.15, but opted out of the final.

And at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center meet, in California, Kyron Blaise finished seventh in the men's long jump with a 7.36m leap.
