CURTIS COX and Tonya Nero were both victorious yesterday as they captured the male and female 15-kilometre race in the Eastern Credit Union's 28th Annual Road Race, otherwise known as the Granny Luces Classic, which concluded at the Credit Union`s headquarters at La Joya Complex, St Joseph.

The veteran and national distance runner stopped the clock at 52 minutes and 25 seconds, defeating Lionel Dandrade (53:48) while Collin Pereira (53:59) held on to the bronze medal. After the race Cox said, "it feels good to win this year because last year I was the runner-up. After taking the lead within the first mile into the race I relaxed a bit because there was no added pressure." The Simplex athlete admitted that his time for the race was a bit slow because it is his third race in three weeks.

In the women's 15k category, Tonya Nero recorded a fast time of 57 minutes and 45 seconds to beat silver medalist Lindsay Mies (1.06:25) and third placed Christine Regis (1.07:49).

The Athletic Trainer athlete was full of praise as she said, "I am happy to have captured my fourth ECU 15k title, I felt accomplished with my performance and I am satisfied with the time." She later acknowledged that running with the men assisted her in producing a good time.

The Annual Road Race comprised of three races - 15k, a three-leg 15k relay and a 5k all started simultaneously in wet conditions at 6.30 am at the Arima Velodrome and the St Mary's Children Home in Tacarigua respectively.

At the prize giving ceremony, Wayne Estrada, president of Eastern Credit Union was full of encouragement to everyone present.

"In hosting this race we hoped to not only engage the community but also the entire nation. We also wanted to promote healthy active lifestyles generally so we encouraged the participation of not only athletes but everyone that was willing and able to make it to the end." Also in attendance in full athletic wear was the energetic 88-year-old Lynette"Granny" Luces who was disappointed to not be a starter in the 5k.

She insisted that preparation for her next race has already started.
