Port-of-Spain district reigns at Schools Athletics

The district of Port-of- Spain and Environs was crowned overall champions of the 2016 Atlantic National Primary Schools Track and Field Championships after a lengthy programme of event at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, on Wednesday.

From the get-go, Port-of- Spain showed their class as they captured golden finishes in six of the 10 opening events. Shakiah Phillip (5:30.48) topped the field in tourney's opener (Girls 1500m) while teammate Khaylon Antoine (4:56.73) followed suit, winning the male equivalent.

In event four, Makaelan Woods (9.23s) continued Port-of-Spain's dominance by capturing gold in the Boys Under-9 100m. Rounding off their champion showings in the first 10 events were Christiano Phillip (13.78s) in the Boys Under-11 100m, Shiniqua Bascombe (12.62s) in the Girls 13- 15 100m and Jeremiah Joseph (11.94s) in the male equivalent.

When Port-of-Spain wasn't at the peak of the podium, districts like Tobago, St George's East and Caroni fought for top spot. In the end, the eventual overall winners finished with 483.5 points while Tobago held on to a distant second (368pts) and Caroni (343pts) third. Victoria (326pts), St George's East (313pts), North East (265.5), St Patrick (252.5pts) and South East (164.5pts) rounded off eight-team standings.

Tobago fought valiantly as young athletes Janae de Gannes (Girls Under-11 100m, 200m), Nathaniel Charles (Boys Under- 9 100m), Kevon Mc Kenna (Boys Under-13 200m, 400m) and Jakeem Sandy (Boys 1500m walk) all produced golden performances in their respective events.

Port-of-Spain and Environs on the other hand, won seven of the eight age group relays, bolstering their final tally beyond sight of the nearest finishers.

Sierra Joseph (Victoria) 14.36s).

U-11 100m – 1. Vanessa Stephens (St George East) 13.27s; 2. Renesha Andrews (P-o-S) 13.57s); 3. Nikida Peters (St Patrick) 13.66s).

U-11 Long Jump – 1. Janae DeGannes (Tobago) 4.94m; 2.

Rhianna Jackson (St George East) 3.9m; 3. Akilah Jacob (St Patrick) 3.87m.

Selected Boys Results : U-13 Ball Throw – 1. Isaiah Jonte (Tobago) 68.10m; 2. Daniel Wickham (Caroni) 61.57m); 3. Sachin Rampersad (Victoria) 56.39m.

U-11 Long Jump – 1. Trevaughn Stewart (St George East) 4.13m; 2. Joel Valentine (St Patrick) 3.94m; 3. Justin Henry (Tobago) 3.9m.

13-15 Discus Throw – 1.

Christopher Crawford (Tobago) 44.88m; 2. Darion Felix (Victoria) 29.21m; 3. Antonio De Freitas (North East) 22.6m.

U-13 High Jump – 1. Omari Gordon (Tobago) 1.35m; 2. Wayne Edwards (St George East) 1.35m; 3. Nickosi Martin (Caroni) 1.30m.
